Norton Security Scan Help About Norton Security Scan Running a scan About the Results Summary tab About the Attention Required tab About the Detailed Results tab Scheduling a scan About the Security Assessment window Exporting scan results About Norton Security Scan ^Back to top Norton Security Scan provides free on-demand scanning of viruses, spyware, and other security risks. This tool is not intended to be a replacement for continuous, real-time protection from the latest security risks. Norton Security Scan detects the following security risks: Viruses Programs that infects another program, boot sector, partition sector, or document by inserting itself or attaching itself to that medium. Most viruses just replicate; many also do damage. Trojan horses Programs containing malicious code that is disguised as or hiding in something benign, such as a game or utility. Hack tools Tools that are used by a hacker to gain unauthorized access to your computer. One type of hack tool, a keystroke logger, tracks and records your individual keystrokes and can send this information back to the hacker. Spyware Programs that can scan systems or monitor activity and relay the information to other computers or locations in cyberspace. Adware Programs that facilitate the delivery of advertising content through their own window, or by using another program's interface. Trackware Programs that track system activity, gather system information, or track user habits, and relay this information to third-party organizations. The information that is gathered by such programs is neither personally identifiable nor confidential. Trackware programs are installed with the user's consent, and may also be packaged as part of other software that is installed by the user. To resolve these security risks and protect your computer from future infections, it is recommended that you install and maintain security software. Note: Norton Security Scan does not detect rootkits. Running a scan ^Back to top Norton Security Scan uses Symantec virus definitions to scan your computer for the latest security risks. Virus definitions are automatically updated when your computer is connected to the Internet. You will also receive Norton Security Scan product updates through the Internet. To run a scan In the Norton Security Scan window, do one of the following: Click Quick Scan to run a fast scan of the areas of your computer that are most likely to be targeted by viruses. Because this scan does not scan your entire computer, it takes less time to run than a Full System Scan. Click Full System Scan to run a comprehensive scan of all of the boot records, files, and running processes that are on your computer. Click Start Scan. About the Results Summary tab ^Back to top The Results Summary tab shows the results of your most recent scan. The summary includes the number of scanned files and detected risks. If your most recent scan was a Quick Scan, this window shows the results of a fast scan of the areas of your computer that are often targeted by viruses, spyware, and other risks. If your most recent scan was a Full System Scan, this window shows the results of a comprehensive scan of your entire computer. The Results Summary tab statuses are as follows: Total items scanned Indicates how many files, master boot records, or boot records were scanned. Total security risks detected Indicates how many viruses, spyware programs, and other risks were detected. Total items resolved Indicates how many items, if any, were resolved. Click the Detailed Results tab to learn more about the resolved risks. Total items that require attention Indicates how many risks were not resolved. Click the Attention Required tab to learn more about these items. About the Attention Required tab ^Back to top The Attention Required tab displays information about the viruses, spyware, and other security risks that are detected on your computer. About the Security Assessment window ^Back to top When you have finished running Norton Security Scan, the Security Assessment window appears. In addition to displaying the results of the current scan, Norton Security Scan provides an analysis of your security based on whether the following types of security software are installed, turned on, and up-to-date: Antivirus Antivirus software protects your computer against future infections by viruses, Trojan horses, and other security threats. Firewall Firewall software protects your computer against future network threats. Norton Security Scan detects security risks that are already on your computer. However, scanning does not completely protect your computer. Some security risks damage your computer as soon as they infect it. Removing these risks after the fact doesn't always repair the damage they have caused. For this reason, it is important to install and maintain security software that proactively protects your computer and blocks security risks before they reach your computer.
